AMPS is a cellular analog mobile system introduced in 1982 on the 800 MHz frequency and is based on analog FM technology. 25 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz range have been allocated to the service provider. The available frequency spectrum is divided into channels of 30 kHz each. Some of the channels are designated for control only and
the remaining are used for carrying subscriber traffic as well as control signals. The AMPS standard was the foundation
for the industry in the U.S. during the early days of wireless phone technology.
