As the holiday season approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the gifts that bring true joy and meaning into our lives. While many are busy shopping for presents, playing with tinsel and lights and decorations, there’s a gift that goes beyond trinkets and baubles—the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who serve as first responders, including the often-overlooked PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) telecommunicators.
I come from a family of first responders. My father was a police officer on the gritty streets of Boston and many of us have served in the military. From personal experience, we understand all too well the sacrifices that police, fire, military and others make as they take time away from home and family to run towards the danger that others run away from. Duty, when it calls, all too often does so at night, on weekends and during the holiday season.
But behind every emergency response is another group of unsung heroes—PSAP telecommunicators. These are the voices we hear when we dial 911. They are calm and reassuring, answering our calls for help when we need it most. Often working under intense pressure, PSAP telecommunicators must remain clear-headed and focused as they coordinate the response efforts of police, fire, and medical teams. The worst hour of the worst days of our lives are for them yet another Tuesday. They are the backbone of emergency response, without whom our first responders would not be able to effectively do their jobs.
This holiday season, let us match their many gifts with our gratitude and recognition. While we may not be able to give them anything tangible, we can acknowledge their sacrifice and express our appreciation for the hard work they do day in and day out. A simple thank you, a note of appreciation, or a show of support can go a long way in making them feel valued and respected.
